How to Learn to Buy a Business: The Programs and Resources Worth Knowing

A decade ago, learning how to buy a business meant piecing it together from a few blog posts and a lot of nerve. Today there is a real education ecosystem around acquisition, often called entrepreneurship through acquisition, or ETA, and knowing where to start saves you months. Here is an honest map of what is out there and who each option is actually for.

University and MBA programs

The path runs deepest through business schools. Stanford Graduate School of Business pioneered the research on search funds and still publishes the studies most of the field references. Harvard Business School professors Richard Ruback and Royce Yudkoff built a widely followed course and wrote the standard primer on the subject. Beyond those two, a growing list of top programs now teach ETA formally, including Chicago Booth, Wharton, Dartmouth's Tuck, Duke's Fuqua, NYU Stern, Yale SOM, and INSEAD, most with a course, a club, or a dedicated center.

If you are in an MBA program or seriously considering one, this is the richest and most structured way in. You get the frameworks, the case studies, and just as valuable, a network of classmates and alumni who are doing the same thing. If an MBA is not in your plans, do not worry. Much of the same knowledge is available outside the classroom.

Books

You can absorb the core framework from a short reading list. Buy Then Build by Walker Deibel is the common starting point for first-time buyers. The HBR Guide to Buying a Small Business, from the Harvard professors above, is the practical, step-by-step companion. The Messy Marketplace by Brent Beshore is worth reading for the seller's point of view, which most buyers underweight. And when you start thinking about the far end of the journey, Built to Sell by John Warrillow reframes ownership around eventual exit. Four books will not make you an operator, but they will give you the vocabulary and the shape of the whole process.

Podcasts

If you learn by hearing real deals, this is the fastest way in and it is free. Acquiring Minds interviews people who have actually bought businesses, walking through how the deals came together. Think Like an Owner leans toward the operating and investing side. Think Big, Buy Small, hosted by the Harvard ETA professors, brings the academic rigor in a conversational format. A few weeks of listening on your commute will teach you more about the texture of real acquisitions than any single book.

Communities and online resources

Searchfunder has become the main online hub for the search and acquisition world, where buyers, investors, and advisors trade questions and deal talk. The broader small business acquisition community on X is active and unusually generous with advice. These are where the theory meets real, current practice, and where you find out what is actually working right now rather than what worked five years ago.

For self-funded and non-MBA searchers

Not everyone comes to this through a business school, and the ecosystem has caught up. There is a growing world of independent courses and accelerators aimed at self-funded searchers and people buying smaller, main-street businesses, including well-known voices in the "buy a boring business" space and training programs that walk you through a search hands-on. These vary widely in quality and price, so treat them the way you would any paid education: start with the free resources first, and only pay once you know what specific gap you are filling.

How to choose

The right starting point depends on who you are. A career-changer leaving a corporate role should start free, with two or three books, a couple of podcasts, and a Searchfunder account, before spending a dollar. An MBA student or applicant should lean into the ETA course and club at their school, which is a genuine advantage. A self-funded searcher going after a smaller business should look at the practical, hands-on programs, while staying skeptical of anything that promises a shortcut. In every case, the sequence is the same: learn the framework cheaply, then find the people who have done it.

Where education ends and doing begins

Here is the honest limit of all of this. Programs, books, and podcasts teach you the theory of buying a business. They are excellent at that. But the moment you move from learning to doing, analyzing a real target, structuring an actual deal, financing it, and then running the company, you need practitioners, not more coursework. That is a different kind of support, and it is where most first-time buyers feel suddenly alone.

That gap is exactly what Five Experts exists to fill. We are the operating system for buying and owning a business, connecting you with vetted experts across every phase, from search through exit, so you are supported by people who have actually done the work when it counts. Learn everything you can from the programs above. Then, when it is time to do it for real, come do it with a bench behind you.
