Six million businesses are going to change hands over the next decade. Twelve million jobs ride on those transitions. Most of the people buying those businesses are doing it for the first time, and here is the part that gets less attention: the deals mostly close. What fails is what comes after. For an SBA-financed buyer, Year 1 execution failure can mean loan default and a personal guarantee called.
Well-capitalized acquirers survive Year 1 at much higher rates, and not because they buy better businesses. They do five specific things after every close. All five are replicable by a single buyer, and none of them requires a fund.
1. They build the bench before they need it. Before close, they know which fractional CFO, which operations person, and which attorney they will call, by name. Do the same: write your bench list during diligence. The worst time to find an expert is the week the problem arrives.
2. They run a 100-day plan with a fixed structure. Not a wish list: 30 days stabilize, 30 days assess, 40 days build, reviewed weekly. If your plan has more than two improvement projects in the first 60 days, it is a fantasy document.
3. They audit key-person risk in week one. List every function that stops if one person quits. For each name, write what would keep them, and have that conversation in the first month, not after the resignation.
4. They put cash on a weekly rhythm. A 13-week cash flow, updated every Monday. Most Year 1 emergencies announce themselves six weeks early in that view. Owners without it get the news from the bank instead.
5. They get the read from peers. Someone who closed twelve months ahead of you has already met your next three problems. A standing peer group is not a nice-to-have; it is pattern recognition you cannot buy hourly.
That is the whole gap between the buyers with infrastructure and the buyers without it: five habits, all available to you. Five Experts exists to make them the default, with vetted experts matched to your phase, peers working the same phase, and a command center that runs the plan.
